The Kid stands down, which everyone misconstrues as cowardice, but when he sees Corbett harassing a woman outside, he races outside and punches the guy. The woman, Susan Clark, thanks him, and the Kid spends the next day having daydreams about her beauty. They start spending lots of time with each other, but then the Kid finds out her father is the local sherriff.

His problems get worse when the Garson Gang rides into town. The sheriff finally figures out that the Rawhide Kid is the boy dating his daughter, distracting Sheriff Clark from tracking down the Garson Gang, who ride into town and kidnap Susan.

The Kid goes beserk and races after the Garson Gang. He tracks them down while they're robbing a bank, and he subdues them with some sharp shooting. But in order to help Susan forget him - a renegade whose love she could never truly own - he pretends to steal the money and tells her he's a no-good outlaw.
