Synopsis:
The Silver Surfer reads a news headline proclaiming the threat of the Doomsday Man and heads to a United Nations conference that is discussing it. At the UN meeting, the famous scientist Dr. Kronton describes how the threat of the Doomsday Man came to be. He had developed the robot to aid man in conquering hostile planets, but the Doomsday Man robot became super powerful, so much so that he fears that if it got out of control, they would not be able to overcome him. To stave that off, they stored the robot in a bunker on a remote island in the ocean...but according to Kronton's sensors, the robot appears to be stirring.
He tries to persuade the governments of the UN to address the problem, but they are wary. The Surfer crashes the meeting and hears Kronton out, then decides to look into it himself. He takes Kronton and flies to the remote island.
They find the robot mounting his escape from inside, grabbing a cobalt bomb and pushing his way through the path that the Silver Surfer had made to get inside the underground bunker. Slowly, the Surfer figures out the dishonesty of the scientist, and after pushing on him for a bit, Kronton confesses that it was all a plot he had developed to have the Doomsday Man march to US shores with the cobalt bomb, whereupon only Kronton could defuse the threat. He would then hold the security of the country for ransom. He offers to split the money with Silver Surfer, who refuses.
The Surfer faces Doomsday Man in a frightful melee in the city streets, and Kronton is killed in the action. The Doomsday Man falls into a deep pit. Blame for the death of Kronton, naturally, falls at the feet of the Silver Surfer.
