Synopsis: Shalla Bal is led on a journey across space, from Zenn-La to Earth, by Yarro Gort, an ambitious and arrogant man who wants her hand in marriage. To do that, he must prove to Norrin Radd's forlorn lover that the Surfer is either dead or has become disloyal.

The Surfer saves a cop and a bridge jumper he was attempting to help from falling to their deaths. The appreciate is shortlived as the gathering crowd murmurs their disapproval and scorn of the Surfer. He heads to Al Harper's cabin and reclaims the clothing and money he had left behind there, then heads to South America to find a land "ravaged by warfare" on his relentless search for understanding the Earth and its restless denizens. He sees some violent turmoil on the ground and gets past an armed unit of the occupier's army, and is taken in by the freedom fighter Donna Maria Perez and hidden in her attic. Donna is kidnapped by the occupiers and is told to give up the location of the Surfer.

The Surfer tracks her to the prison where she is being held. The guards open fire on him, and after trying to ignore his pesky assailants, he finally tires of this and fights back. He fights his way through the militants and rescues Donna Maria, then destroys their base. An appreciate Donna Maria embraces the Surfer and kisses him, an incident which just happens to be captured by Yarro's vid-screen and seen by Shalla Bal....
