WHAT IF MARVEL MASTERWORKED THE BRONZE AGE?

The Silver Age is regarded as the pinnacle of the Marvel Age of Comics. To be sure, Kirby, Lee, Ditko et al. produced a sheer volume of popular and innovative pages that are unparalleled by any company!

But when the 70's rolled around, they didn't just quit making comics! No, sir! Sure, Jack Kirby took off for DC Comics, but there was still Fantastic Four to publish! Spider-Man had yet to be hit by the high-drama of the death of Gwen Stacy, the Avengers were nearing some of their most famous comics of all time, and the best issues of Captain Marvel, Iron Man and Daredevil lay ahead

In fact, that's where this What If? Bronze Masterworks page will start. Each feature comic map picks up where the last one in the silver age ended. This first page includes maps and mockup images for all the "holdover comics," books that maintained publication all through the sixties and into the seventies. This includes the cornerstone titles of Fantastic Four, Thor, Avengers, Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk and Daredevil, as well as Sub-Mariner and Sgt. Fury, two titles that wouldn't make it out of the decade alive. X-Men, which continued its original numbering, will be included in the 1980s page, which is where the Masterworks have now reached.

In my way of thinking, the Silver Age ended and the Bronze Age began when Jack left Marvel for DC and was able to produce his Fourth World epic, and Marvel ramped up their publishing schedule with an influx of new characters, new editors and new creators. And that's the timeframe that this page represents. So enjoy this page for awhile! I hope it won't be too long before we start to see Marvel Masterworks taking these maps down before our very eyes!
