Masterworks aren't the only line of hardcovers Marvel publishes. In 2002, they began
to reprint many of their best comics of today in oversize hardcover editions
that provide a great value and deluxe presentation.
The dimensions on these books are approximately 11 x 7.5 inches, and the pages are
high-grade glossy paper. The images in the artwork really pop in this
format, because the pages are so much larger than the regular comic format.
The books vary in page count, from reprinting small 4 issue limited series
to manhandling 16 issues or more of comics continuity between hardcovers!
They all come with dustjackets and make for a very nice bookshelf of archival
quality hardcovers. It's one thing to expect this kind of treatment for
the Silver Age classics we love, but to also get it for some of our favorite
recent comics is a very generous opportunity from Marvel.
Certain feature characters have had a voluminous amount of their recent comics reprinted
in their entirety: the first 40+ issues of Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate
X-Men, as well as the entire 16 issue run of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up,
have been reprinted, and wide swaths of Hulk, Punisher, Daredevil, New
X-Men and X-Force as well. These books provide several hundred pages of
material, and when bought at discount prices through places Tales of Wonder,
it pays for itself as an incredible value!
Another great thing about these books is the generous extras provided. In
the X-Force book alone, there were dozens of cool images from Mike Allred
and Darwyn Cooke that never made the comic, like alternate covers, sketch
drawings or character renderings. The complete Milligan script for the
Silent issue was included, as well as all the covers to the X-Force TPBs,
and more! All these extras plus 12 issues of X-Force in hardcover? That's
a great value, my friends!
One thing you need to know about most of these titles is that they are only printed
in short initial print runs! Books like Alias, Cage, X-Force and the Ultimate
Team-Up book are either out-of-print or will be soon. Some books, like
the Ultimate titles, may go back for second printings, but I would budget
for these if you really want one, and don't wait around to purchase it,
because before you know it, it could be gone!
Please enjoy reading up on what's to be found inside these books. Each title will (eventually)
have a link to its own description page, giving a full account on the
contents within.
