From the Mouths of the Marvels:

"We will perform a psychic lobotomy. We will excise those parts of her brain which relate to her mutant abilities. This, we know we can do without risk. She will no longer be Phoenix, no longer be Marvel Girl. She will become - - and, I pray, forever remain - - a normal human being."

-- Lilandra, pg. 32

A 180 degree different ending to the Dark Phoenix story!

Phoenix: The Untold Story #1
April 1984 • 34 pages + 13 page interview

Script: Chris Claremont • Letters: Tom Orzechowski
Pencils: John Byrne • Inks: Terry Austin

This one-shot was published over two years after X-Men #137. It contained Chris Claremont and John Byrne's vision of how the story would have been told had they been allowed to keep Jean alive. The last five pages of Phoenix: The Untold Story are completely different than the last six pages of X-Men #137. Both stories are structurally similar up until the point when Jean and Scott make their last stand in the Blue Area of the Moon. However, there are significant differences in dialogue and character objectivity throughout Phoenix: The Untold Story.

Below is the synopsis of the last five pages of the Phoenix one-shot.

Chapter Three Synopsis: Jean is laid out on a Shi'ar operating table to be given a "psychic lobotomy", one that will strip her of all parts of her brain that hold her psychic abilities. With this, Lilandra is hopeful that Jean will no longer be able to exhibit the Phoenix Force. The tension builds as the operation is performed, and once complete, Jean falls to the ground in a daze. Scott holds her in his arms, but she seems near death. Lilandra reaches out with compassion, but Scott wants to hear none of it, and he picks up Jean and with the X-Men they are transported back to Earth.

The Dark Phoenix Tapes: Also included in this book is a 13-page transcript of a roundtable discussion in 1984 between the creators involved in the Dark Phoenix Saga. Included are Chris Claremont, John Byrne, editor-in-chief Jim Shooter, Terry Austin, and editors Louise Jones (now Louise Simonson) and Jim Salicrup.
