OTHER HARDCOVER REPRINTS
I am a hardcover reprint junkie. Besides
Marvel Masterworks, the other big dog on the street is the DC Archives series. That wonderful collection of books started
about the same time as Masterworks got rolling back in the late 80's. When Marvel gave up their line in the early 90's,
Masterworks actually had outproduced the Archives in quantity. DC never stopped making their books, though, and at
this point on the eve of year 2002, they have now managed 68 Archives, having worked up to the rate of one a month! For
fans of DC's glorious past, it is a trove of unending delight.
I was always a Marvel man, from my earliest days of reading comics in the early 80's til now, really...but when Marvel wasn't
producing Masterworks, my appetites took me to the Archives, and there is some amazing stuff there. Jack Cole's Plastic
Man stands out as some of the greatest comics ever done, and the Legion books have always been fun. The early Wonder
Woman stories are pretty cool, and I really enjoyed the Starman book, with Jack Burnley's art and some really kooky stories
inside. My favorite besides Plas has to be Hal Jordan's Green Lantern books. Gil Kane rocks!!! And DC continues to mine new
territory with first Archives for Sgt. Rock, Black Canary, Doom Patrol, Supergirl, and more.
Another series from DC that is outstanding is the Spirit Archives. Will Eisner was one of the early genius' of comics. His work
was a huge influence on some of my favorite artists' like Steve Ditko, and his work breathes like it was just created yesterday.
The Spirit books just keep getting better and better.
Below is a checklist of the Archives, Spirit and other hardcover reprint
series. I will be listing more reprints that come out in the future, with links for purchase at amazon. A quick side note: it took a
lot of work to come up with these links, since amazon's search engine for some reason omits certain titles. For example, a
search for Green Lantern Archives didn't turn up volume 2 for me. This checklist ought to be very handy as it will mean you
shouldn't have to search through amazon. I will update any bad links, please let me know if you come across one!
